Shunkō drew the pictures for a book entitled Chōrui Shasei Zufu (i.e., Atlas of Birds Sketched from Life). Published in four volumes between 1928 and 1934, this book included one hundred lithographic pictures of flowers and (or) birds found in Japan. The first twenty-five of these lithographs are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. As implied by the book’s title, the birds (and flowers) were drawn and colored in a true-to-life way, more typical of European and American bird-and-flower art than Japanese art up to that point in time.
